Remdesivir

 

Class of drug: Broad spectrum anti coronavirus

 

Mechanism: it blocks the enzymes (RNA polymerase) needed by coronavirus to make its copies decreasing the viral load

 

Current status: Experimental

 

Indications: COVID-19 suspected or confirmed – requiring oxygen, mechanical ventilation or ECMO

 

Dose:

Intravenous- 200 mg on day 1 then 100 mg OD for total 5 days- if not on mechanical ventilation

Duration 10 days if on mechanical ventilation

Not recommended in severe renal failure


Side Effects- Anaemia, nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, Nausea, vomiting etc.

 

FDA Status: Remdesivir is not an approved drug for SARS Cov-2 or any other infection. FDA has approved EUA (Emergency Use Authorisation) of Remdesivir for the hospitalised patients  

 

Bottom line: Remdesivir can be a drug to be tried in correct clinical setting
